Son Plays "Papa" and Reveals Future Plans

Joel Martin, age 17 and the son of Bill and Lenore Martin, played the part of Papa in the drama production called I Remember Mama. The play was performed by the Ukarumpa High School Drama Class on May 6th and 7th.

I Remember Mama is a touching story about the struggles of a Norwegian immigrant family living in San Francisco in the 1920s.

When asked about his future plans, Joel said, "After I graduate from high school in June 1995, the whole family will return to the USA for furlough. After traveling around the States for a while to sight see and visit friends and relatives, we will return to Texas and I will probably enroll in LeTourneau University located in Longview, Texas. There I am planning to major in Computer Science or Computer Engineering. After I graduate from there I am not sure what I will do. Perhaps I will join a Christian mission organization and return to PNG as a computer programmer or a computer technician."

BMX and Band Top Fourteen-Year-Old Son’s Interests

Jason Martin, age 14, spends a lot of his time on his BMX bike (when he is not doing school work). He reports: "There is a BMX track near here and me and my friends go there and do jumps and race." Riding on his BMX bike, however, is not the only playing he does well. He says, "I am doing well in the middle school band playing percussion. I am in first chair and I really enjoy playing in the band."

Norwegian Mama Plays Part of English Tutor

Lenore Martin, whose ancestors hail from Norway, has been playing the part of a second-language English tutor for Translation Course students as well as for ninth grader Masami Ohtsuba, the son of translators from Japan who are working here in PNG. Lenore says, "It is a very challenging, but rewarding experience to be helping Masami. I’m learning lots too as I attempt to teach the finer points of English to Masami."

Papa Plays Translation Advisor, Trainer and Course Coordinator

Bill Martin has kept himself busy playing the roles of translation advisor for the Lindrou translation program as well as Coordinator for regional translation courses held on Manus Island. He reports: "The training of national translators is certainly challenging. For the past two years we have been working at expanding the Lindrou team of translators. Charles Kowak is currently taking his second translation course here at Ukarumpa. Five additional Lindrou trainees started their initial training at the Manus regional translation course in March this year. I am trying to provide as much training as possible before our furlough next year. Once their training is complete, we are hoping that the Lindrou New Testament can be finished by the time Jason graduates from high school in 1998.

Praise Items: Prayer Items:
Thank you for praying for Bill as he coordinated and acted as Principal of the first National Translators’ Course held in Manus back in March. Praise the Lord that the course went very well and had 20 students (five of whom are Lindrous). Continue to Pray for Charles Kowak that he will be able to retire from his teaching position and devote his time to translation work. He is still awaiting a decision from the Department of Education.
Thank you for praying for Timothy Kundrake. In March this year he decided that he would not be able to continue as the primary translator of the Lindrou New Testament. While he will give that responsibility to Charles and the other translators in training, praise the Lord that he plans to polish up the books he has started (Romans, Galatians and Acts), and help with village testing of the books that the others translate. Pray for the five Lindrou men who have begun their training as national translators. Their names are: Alphonse, Job, Gordon, John, and Peter
Pray for Bill who has been having pain in his lower left jaw for the past two months. The dentist and doctors here have not yet been able to determine the cause.
